Location: Dullstroom

Date: July 2014

I’ve been to the Mpumalanga Province many times before, and have always enjoyed the rich vegetation and beautiful natural views. Since the Bucket List Project was launched I have had a holiday in this province before, when we went to the wonderful Marloth Park. This time we were looking for a weekend breakaway and decided to revisit this Province, but stay a bit closer to home by going to Dullstroom.

Welcome to Dullstroom

Welcome to Dullstroom!

Contrary to what the name may imply, Dullstroom is anything but dull!

This quaint little town is famous for its artistic qualities, fly fishing and as a general favourite spot for holiday-makers. The Boyfriend and I were in need of a relaxing “time out” and this town was the perfect location. We packed our bags and hit the road on Friday morning, only to return back to “civilisation” on Sunday afternoon.

The great thing about Dullstroom is that there is a something special for everyone. accommodation ranges in price and luxury to suit all pockets and tastes. Once you find a place you like, you can spend the weekend in your cabin, outdoors, or meandering down the main street discovering all the local shops and cuisine.

Our Magnificent View, and our Chalet for the weekend

We decided to spend our first day in our beautiful chalet making a huge homemade feast, and then as night fell we lit up the large fireplace and sat sipping red wine and catching up on some quality time. As the night wore on I also spoiled myself by sitting in the luxurious spa bath for an hour with a good book and glass of wine – such decadence!

On Saturday we explored the town’s eateries and wandered through the little shops sampling goods at the chocolatiers, going to the many art galleries and by doing some Whisky Tasting. The long day coupled with the whiskey tasting made me very drowsy, so we headed straight back to our chalet for another night of gourmet cooking and fireside relaxing.

On the Sunday morning we had hoped to do a bit more of the ‘outdoorsy’ activities on offer, but realised that we had lost most of the morning being lazy and having a long brunch. I wasn’t too disappointed though, because our main purpose for the weekend was to get some R&R, and that was a goal we fully achieved!

So would I recommend Dullstroom as a Must-See Holiday Destination? Yes! This town offers it all, and would be perfect for a family getaway, friendship retreat, or even a romantic escape. The activities and sites are more than enough to ensure that there is something interesting to suit everyone’s taste.
